Applying microcement over existing tiles can create a continuous new surface with less demolition. However, not every tiled surface is suitable and some tiles should still be removed.
Microcement can often be applied over tiles when they are firmly bonded, stable, clean and suitable for the selected preparation system. Loose tiles, active cracks, moisture, movement or damaged layers must be corrected first and may make removal the better choice.
Check what is behind the tile. A tile can look fine while being poorly attached to the adhesive, screed or wall behind it. Tapping, inspection and small local checks may be needed to confirm that the full surface is stable. The tiles must also be free from grease, soap, wax and other dirt. Preparation often includes cleaning, abrasion, grout-line treatment and a suitable primer. The exact steps depend on the chosen system.
Grout lines, cracks and movement. Grout lines create repeated changes in depth and material. They must be levelled or treated so the old tile pattern does not show through the new finish. Movement joints are different from grout lines. They allow parts of the building to move. Identify and detail them correctly instead of simply filling every line.
Bathrooms require a second question. In a bathroom, strong tile adhesion is not enough. The existing waterproofing, floor slopes, drains, corners and pipe openings also matter. A new decorative finish does not automatically repair failed wet-area construction. If there are leaks, lasting damp, hollow tiles or active cracks, opening and repairing the construction is usually safer than covering it.
Check levels and connections. Microcement is relatively thin, but preparation and levelling add height. Check doors, drains, bathroom fittings, thresholds and nearby floors before choosing an overlay. The main benefit is not avoiding demolition at any cost. It is keeping a strong existing surface when that creates a safe and well-finished result.
