Is microcement waterproof?

The word waterproof does not mean the same thing for every microcement product or every layer. The decorative finish, protective sealer and waterproof construction behind it each have a different job.

Some complete microcement systems are designed for wet areas. However, the name microcement alone does not mean that the finish is the complete waterproofing solution. Performance depends on the exact system, the base, waterproof layer, details, application and maintenance.

Finish, sealer and waterproofing. The microcement coats create the visible colour and texture. A sealer helps protect against wear, stains and water according to the product design. A waterproof layer or membrane protects the construction behind the finish. Different tested systems arrange these layers in different ways. This is why the exact project system matters more than a general claim about all microcement.

Pay attention to corners and openings. The main surface is often not the difficult part. Wall-to-floor corners, drains, pipe openings, niches, thresholds and changes between materials need careful waterproof detailing. The floor slope should move water toward the drain and avoid standing water. Complete the wet-area shape and drainage design before applying the decorative finish.

Existing bathrooms need investigation. Covering tiles does not prove that the waterproofing behind them is sound. If the room has leaks, damp, loose finishes or failed joints, find and repair the cause before adding a new finish. An existing bathroom may be suitable for an overlay after inspection. This decision must be made for the actual site.

Use and maintenance still matter. Abrasive cleaning, strong chemicals and ignored damage can weaken a protective finish. Use cleaning products approved for the installed system, and inspect any cut, chip or damaged area. SENSE confirms the exact products and care instructions for each project.
